This page includes a series of videos explaining (1) the basics of state-and-transition simulation models (STSMs), and (2) tutorials on how to develop STSMs using the ST-Sim software. Tutorials include topics such as: creating a simple non-spatial ST-Sim model from scratch, turning a non-spatial model into a spatial one, adding interactions between simulation cells and more. You may want to visit this page frequently as new tutorials will be added from time to time.

Getting started with ST-Sim: creating a simple non-spatial model

This brief tutorial will provide you with an overview of ST-Sim (version 3).


Note that a copy of the ST-Sim library produced in the tutorial can be found here. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to your computer and select File | Open Library... in ST-Sim to navigate to this "ST-Sim Tutorial.ssim" file and open it.

Spatial models in ST-Sim: getting from non-spatial to spatial

In this tutorial, we will take the non-spatial model created in the previous tutorial and turn it into a spatial model. You will learn how to run spatial models as well as how to create and edit maps of spatial outputs.

Note that a copy of the ST-Sim library produced in the tutorial can be found here. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to your computer and select File | Open Library... in ST-Sim to navigate to this "ST-Sim Spatial Tutorial.ssim" file and open it.

Spatially explicit events in ST-Sim

In this tutorial, we will simulate spatially explicit events by defining a size distribution for fire transitions.

Loading spatial inputs into ST-Sim

In this tutorial, we will load raster maps of initial conditions and transition probabilities into ST-Sim.
